A Pawsome Adventure in the San Juans

Blaine and his pup headed to the southwest corner of the state to explore all the things a dog loves!
With a good weather window in the forecast, my good friend Pete and I decided to take the dogs for a weekend of peak bagging in the San Juans. We spent the first day hiking Sunshine and Redcloud. The trails were in great condition and the wildflowers were abundant. Sunday was spent hiking up the most beautiful, wildflower ridden trails I’ve ever seen up to the summit of Handies.
We ended up spending the afternoons dodging thunderstorms but the alpine starts rewarded us with stunning views and clear skies. The dogs weren’t as impressed with the views as they were too busy enjoying every little snowfield and alpine lake they came across.

My Shepsky Bear, is quite the adventure pup. From rocky ridges to mud ridden trails his Ruffwear pack withstood it all! I ended up hiking in the Scarpa Ribelle Runs and they were great for the task at hand. The sock feature around the ankles kept the rocks out of my shoes and the plentiful foam was great for the long stretches of trail running. The Outdoor Research Echo sun hoodie kept me cool and protected me from the strong morning sun while my Arc’teryx Atom LT was versatile and great for those cool summit breaks.
